Outside, on the square
The tables sit on the castle square, facing the church and the walls: you eat inside Monteriggioni, not in front of it. And inside the walls you never hear a car go past: the background is other people’s voices and the swifts. In summer, about one evening a week, the square turns into a stage — concerts and theatre, always over by midnight. In the afternoon there is shade under the parasols; at sunset the stone catches fire; in the evening you have dinner by candlelight as the village empties around you.
